Children and Youth

Christian Education

Our program is for educating our children and youth on biblical stories and more. Children may begin in our Christian Education program when they are three years old. We gather together on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. from September through May. All children, including non-members, are invited to participate.

Our program goes well beyond the classroom. We are mission driven for the children to have an opportunity to help others. Our activities include an annual bake sale, sledding outing, roller skating, bowling, park days, mission outings to nursing homes, swimming outing to Tipton Aquatic Center, and more.

The Christian Education students lead the Christmas Eve service at 6:30 p.m. as a tradition at Zion. Our classrooms are led by volunteer teachers. This is truly a gift to our church and our students to have dedicated teachers who give their time to teach the lessons of our Lord.

Youth Fellowship

The group is open to all junior high and high school age young people. As part of the Youth Fellowship’s contribution to the life of Zion United Church of Christ, they usher the last Sunday of each month, sponsor the Senior Dinner on the first Sunday in December, present the Easter Sunrise Service, and host the Easter breakfast.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is a summer program we provide at our church for any children from three years old to eighth grade. Our week-long program is packed full of crafts, activities, bible study, singing songs, and tons of fun. This is a great week for both the students and the volunteers to experience the energy within our church as some of God’s stories come to life. Participation is open to all children in the community and surrounding areas.

Confirmation (Affirmation of Baptism)

Zion’s educational philosophy grows out of the progressive Christian tradition that emphasizes an educated faith stance that values an open mind and thoughtful consideration on how matters of faith intersect with matters of life. This process begins with an infant and his/her parents and family at baptism and recognizes that parents are the first and best educators of their children not only in secular matters, but also in issues of faith. Confirmation is an educational process whereby youth (middle school students) engage in a more formal look at the promises made on their behalf in baptism by their parents and prepare themselves to accept those promises as their own. Zion asks 7th & 8th grade youth to participate in a 9 month-long educational program that is led by the pastor to explore aspects of Christian expression and the faith’s relationship to the world (including coming to an understanding of other major faiths), as well as rehearsing the basic teachings of the Judeo-Christian Heritage found in the texts of the Hebrew Scriptures; the Gospels and Epistles, and the ongoing experience of people of faith in God’s “Still-Speaking” actions in all of life.

After that period of study, these young people affirm the Baptismal Promises made on their behalf in the Rite of Confirmation; publicly affirming their faith, and receiving the blessing of the church upon their entrance into full church membership.
